ASA Chitose/Shemya/SINOP Reunion
Per our Secretary, Roy Gettz, this is an article developed by Dennis Mitzner. Dennis submitted this article on the Bankhead/Igloo type people, some of whom served at Chitose and/or other stations. T erry Brown and I went through Ft. Devens, SA-430 at NSA, stationed in SINOP Det 4 and then Chitose together. There was Rich Kollen, Ed Cameron (deceased), Owen Mir, Steve Baxter (deceased), (name ?) Sanford, Terry Brown, and myself who traveled to SINOP together. Owen Mir and Sanford were MIA. Almost all of us were 98J's, except Andy Turner who was a maintenance type.
Another person in our group, who I communicate with frequently, is Sgt. Tom Nutgrass. He was my Trick Chief in SINOP. Tom, now 85, lives just outside of Ft. Hood, TX and is a great guy.
In the picture there is Terry Brown, Ed Fickes, Ken Baldwin, Dennis Mitzner, Tom Carroll, Bill Prescott and John Stonska. The seven of us in the picture have been friends for 49 years. We have been getting together, off and on, since 1971 in various parts of the country to include Portland, OR, Denver, CO, Oak Forest and Peoria, IL, Columbus, Kingston and Belpre, OH and Baltimore, MD.
One of the highlights of this past Labor Day weekend was serving Genghis Khan on Sunday night. I hadn't had it in years, a.k.a. Japanese barbeque peculiar to the northern island of Hokkaido, where we all were stationed.
Exercise of the weekend was playing horseshoes. We actually used the heavy metal ones too. And, that's as close as I'll get to heavy metal.
Our next reunion is scheduled over Labor Day weekend 2019; August 30 to September
